Garnet is believed to have gotten its name from the French word “grenat” which means “red like a pomegranate”. However, garnet comes in a much wider variety of colors. In fact, it can be found in every color except blue.
The most common color of garnet is a deep glowing cinnamon red, with hints of orange and brown. These rich hues enhance designs that blend with the exotic flavors of India, Africa and the Orient, reflecting today’s culturally diverse society. Garnet has a special appeal for those seeking a sophisticated, urban look. Tsavorite, a light to dark green variety, commands the highest prices of all garnets because of its rich color and demand. Other varieties common to jewelry are spessartite, a light to dark orange garnet, and rhodalite, a light pink, to dark purple-red often called raspberry.
Garnet traditionally symbolizes faith, truth, friendship, and loyalty. It was believed to dispel fear, protect travelers, inspire deep affection and was also thought to have healing properties, particularly diseases related to the blood.
